Move aside, Paris. There’s a new city of love.

A survey of 2,000 Americans looked at some of the world’s most romantic travel destinations, with Hawaii’s island of Maui coming out on top this year (34%).

While many respondents still value the intimacy that Paris offers (33%), the survey results also indicate that more scenic destinations such as Rome, Italy (29%) and Santorini, Greece (11%) are equally valued.

Others want to soak up the excitement by visiting beaches and tropical locations, such as Cancun, Mexico (19%), Costa Rica (13%) and the British Virgin Islands (12%).

The survey, conducted by Talker Research in partnership with Funjet Vacations, found that while respondents want to visit these popular destinations, the majority also believe hidden or smaller destinations are more romantic (69%).

Similarly, more Americans agree that lesser-known travel destinations are better for creating an intimate atmosphere with a partner (45%) and for overall bonding time (45%).

No matter where they go, travel makes respondents feel romantic: On average, people surveyed estimated that they are about 62% more romantic on vacation than in their regular lives.

Romantic Travel

In fact, half of single respondents said the best thing about traveling is the possibility of finding love.

When traveling with their partner, people surveyed said they would show affection by taking walks on the beach (55%), watching the sunset together (54%) and holding hands (53%).

“Vacating together is more than just discovering new places; it’s about igniting, deepening or rekindling romance, escaping the everyday and celebrating the love that binds you two together,” says Dana Studebaker, vice president of consumer brand marketing at Funjet Vacations. “The great thing about all-inclusive resorts is that they offer the perfect stress-free escape, removing the hassle of planning so you can focus entirely on each other.”

But according to Americans, vacationing with your partner isn’t for those interested in cheating: Three-quarters of people consider traveling with their partner a serious step in a relationship (76%).

On average, respondents believe they should be together for about a year before traveling with their partner, but 42% of respondents say they’ll travel sooner than that standard.

For seven in ten (71%) who agree that traveling with their partner is one of the most romantic things they can do together, it’s well worth the wait.

Sometimes the best trips require minimal planning: More respondents consider an impromptu trip with their partner to be more romantic than a pre-planned trip (50% vs. 34%).

If you want to impress your significant other, going on holiday together could be the way to win their heart, with 72% of people agreeing that a spontaneous trip with their partner is sexy.

If you’re interested in getting lucky over the holidays, it might be time to start making plans.

One in five people believe the best time to travel is “cuffling season” (22%), the period between October and mid-February when people focus on finding or maintaining relationships during the colder months.

Nearly a third of people not in a committed relationship are hoping to find a partner during the upcoming cuffing season (31%).

And regardless of relationship status, the same percentage of people plan to travel with their partner this cuffing season.

“When planning a vacation, we always recommend incorporating activities like yoga, snorkeling, paddleboarding, cooking classes, hiking and wine tasting as these activities provide travelers with an opportunity to bond with each other and connect with new people in person over a common interest or new adventure,” says Michael Lawrie, head of global consumer business at Funjet Vacations. “One of the benefits of choosing an all-inclusive resort is that these experiences are readily available and don’t cost extra.”

Research Methodology:

Talker Research surveyed 2,000 members of the American public. This survey Fun Jet Vacations Managed and conducted online Talker Research from July 23rd to July 29th, 2024.

We obtain our information from a non-probability frame, and the two main sources we use are:

  • Traditional online access panels – respondents opt-in to participate in online market research for an incentive
  • Programmatic — Respondents are given the option to participate in a survey online and usually receive a virtual incentive related to the online activity they are participating in.

Those who did not fall into the designated sample were excluded from the survey. Once the survey was administered, dynamic online sampling was used and targets were adjusted to achieve the quotas specified as part of the sampling plan.

Regardless of respondent origin, they were directed to an online survey, which was conducted in English. A link to the survey can be shared upon request. Respondents were awarded points for completing the survey. These points have a small cash value.

Cells are reported for analysis only if they have 80 or more respondents, and statistical significance is calculated at the 95% level. Data are not weighted, but quotas and other parameters are set to reach the desired sample.

Interviews were excluded from the final analysis if they did not pass quality check criteria, which included:

  • Speeders: Respondents who complete the survey in less than one-third of the average interview time will be disqualified as speeders.
  • Open-ended responses: All verbatim responses (fully open-ended questions and other “please provide details” options) are checked for inappropriate or irrelevant text.
  • Bots: Captchas are enabled on the survey to allow the research team to identify and disqualify bots.
  • Duplicates: The survey software has a “de-duplication” feature based on digital fingerprints to ensure that no one can complete the survey more than once.

It should be noted that this study only included individuals with internet access, and the results may not be generalizable to those without internet access.
